Unveiling the Truth Behind the Standard American Diet (SAD)

Updated: Apr 26, 2024

The United States stands at the forefront of healthcare expenditure, boasting the most expensive healthcare system globally. Yet, paradoxically, we lag behind other industrialized nations in terms of quality of life, health equity, and accessibility to healthcare. This discrepancy stems from a fundamental flaw in our healthcare system – the lack of emphasis on implementing lifestyle interventions, particularly regarding diet. Despite the potential of such interventions to prevent diseases and enhance overall well-being, they remain largely overlooked in medical training and practice.

Beyond the healthcare realm, the influence of our dietary choices extends to government policies and economic structures. The subsidization of goods, driven by lobbying efforts, often prioritizes the production of ultra-processed foods and animal products. But are these subsidized foods truly beneficial for our health?

In recent years, partially spurred by the whole food, plant-based movement, there has been a noticeable shift away from dairy and animal products. However, this transition has not gone unnoticed by corporate giants, who have swiftly capitalized on emerging health trends by marketing their products as "plant-based" or "health foods." Yet, a closer examination reveals that many of these so-called health products remain laden with unhealthy additives, lack essential nutrients, and are still unhealthy ultra-processed foods.
